Como, 18/02/2016 – The Insubria Center on International Security (ICIS) is pleased to announce the positive outcome of three training sessions held in the framework of EU CBRN CoE Project 34 “Strengthening Capacities in CBRN event response and related Medical Emergency response under strengthened CBRN event preparedness” – Work Package 2 “Awareness, risk assessment, management of hazardous chemical agents, their precursors and chemical weapons”, which is part of the European Union Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellence Initiative (EU CBRN CoE).

The training sessions were entitled “Training on hazardous chemical agents (including warfare)” and were addressed to experts coming from Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon. The courses aimed to provide awareness related to natural, accidental and criminal/deliberate (terrorist) hazardous chemical accidents. The training addressed to Jordanian experts was held at the premises of the Middle East Scientific Institute For Security in Amman (Jordan) on February 3-4, 2016, the training for Lebanese experts took place at the Grand Serail in Beirut (Lebanon) on February 11-12, 2016, while the one addressed to Iraqi experts was held at the Ramada Beirut Downtown Hotel in Beirut (Lebanon) on February 13-14, 2016.

In particular, the trainings focused on: awareness related to the possible risks associated to natural and accidental hazardous chemical events; awareness related to the possible danger posed by criminal/deliberate (terrorist) hazardous chemical events; classes of chemical agents; chemical safety, security measures and preparedness (including counter terrorism); emergency response and treatment for events involving hazardous chemical agents, their precursors and chemical weapons, dual use chemical agents import /export control and chemical waste management. These training sessions represented an important opportunity to deep the knowledge of the participants, sharing their experience and best practices adopted in their own countries and ideas.
